All too often, symptoms of mental health being presented by the elderly are dismissed as a natural part of the ageing process.

National surveys through the Government Audit Office have shown shocking levels of undiagnosed and misdiagnosed levels of depression and dementia.

Older people in particular are at risk of falling through the cracks in our NHS and it is usually a health crisis which precipitates hospital admission which in turn reveals the severity of the mental health or dementia symptoms.

Specialist mental health beds are often not equipped to support those with frailty and physical needs and intermediate care services are reluctant to admit people with dementia.

Discharge from hospital becomes extremely difficult, even when it is clear that hospitals cannot provide the most appropriate support for the older individual.
