Our many years of experience have shown us that certain personal qualities make an excellent home carer.
Here’s what to look for when choosing the right home carer for your loved one.
Passionate
We choose people who are proud to be home carers. They know they are making a difference in people’s lives and they are passionate about their vocation. This passion helps them overcome the difficulties and frustrations that caring can sometimes bring.
Compassionate
A good home carer will be able to put themselves in the shoes of your loved one and understand how they might be feeling. Getting older and becoming infirm can be a confusing and frightening experience. Our carers understand this. This compassion and empathy helps your home carer to connect with your loved one so that they can support them in the best possible way.
Supportive
At Mumby’s, we understand that caring isn’t just about helping people with personal care or making them meals, though this is of course important. What really matters is ensuring your loved one has the opportunity to live a life that is satisfying and fulfilling for them.
Respectful
Respect is a key attribute in a good home carer. Our carers will always respect your loved one as a person. They will also respect your loved one’s values and preferences and do all they can to support their choices.
Patient
For some people, getting older can be a difficult and sometimes frightening experience. Elderly people can often be confused and resist help and support. They may become irritable and even aggressive at times due to confusion and fear. A good carer must be able to handle these difficulties without becoming flustered or taking things personally.
Also, ordinary tasks such as washing and eating can take much longer for some older people. Our carers will never rush your loved one through their activity or meal but will be patient and allow your loved one to do these things at their own pace.
A sunny disposition
No one wants to be around a moaning Minnie all day! That’s why we choose carers with a naturally sunny disposition. This doesn’t mean they make light of problems or are annoyingly positive about difficult situations. But a cheery smile and a sense of humour can make each day a little brighter and smooth over many difficulties.
Honest and trustworthy
At Mumby’s, we understand that entrusting your loved one to a carer is not a decision you take lightly. We consider it a privilege to have been put in this position of responsibility and our carers do everything they can to honour that trust.
Your home carer will be responsible for important parts of your loved one’s care, such as making sure they eat well, take medications and attend medical appointments. Our carers take these responsibilities seriously so you can relax knowing that your loved one’s needs are being met.
Experience and qualifications
Personal qualities are essential, but of course, you will want to know that your home carer has the qualifications and experience necessary to care for your loved one in the best possible way.
At Mumby’s, we provide professional training to all our carers. Our training is carried out by exceptional trainers from nursing and teaching backgrounds. We cover the 15 care certificate standards as mandatory. We also go further into a variety of specialist and early intervention training programmes.
Our Dementia Care Training is carried out by Trevor Mumby M.Sc. B.A.S.W, who has written 3 books on how to cope with dementia.
We also undertake continued training to ensure our staff are always up to date with the latest developments in best practice.
Observant
One of the big advantages of a home carer is that they get to know your loved one really well. This means that our carers will notice when something about your loved one has changed. A carer must be observant, as sometimes even a small change could indicate something significant. Our carers will keep an eye on your loved one so they will notice any changes such as increased confusion, weight loss or gain, or decreased appetite. They can then ensure your loved one gets medical help early before the situation becomes more serious.
A perfect match
When choosing a carer for your loved one, we endeavour to ensure we find the perfect fit. We match your loved one’s values, personality and interest to find a carer your loved one can connect with on many levels. This helps to foster a meaningful relationship and ensure that your home carer will become a trusted friend.
